Program for overweight children

A general practitioner, pediatrician from the Groene Hart Hospital in Gouda, dietician Mirjam van Egmond-van Dijk, pediatric physiotherapist Patricia Bosma-Tetteroo (Fysio On the Move) and a child psychologist/remedial educationalist have joined forces and started a unique collaboration. This has resulted in a great program for overweight children.

The program:
The general practitioner or pediatrician refers your child to a dietician and pediatric physiotherapist. If necessary, also to a child psychologist or remedial educationalist for extra support. The dietician and pediatric physiotherapist work closely together.
The dietitian Mirjam van Egmond is specially trained (Post-HBO) to guide overweight children. She has developed a nice program to get started with.
All children:
Every overweight child is welcome at the practice from 1 to 17 years old. Depending on the age, we will look at the diet and lifestyle together with the parent and/or child. The goal is to achieve a healthy BMI (healthy weight). That is different for every child. For example, eating differently, moving more, tips for the family if there is little time to cook, what to do if your child has to exercise during meal times, how to deal with a brother/sister in the family, going out to eat, at grandpa/ grandma, at school, playing with a friend or what to do when your friends go to the supermarket to buy candy?
This is an example of numerous situations that can be tricky. That is why it is good to work together and to set achievable goals. In short: tailor-made advice.

For whom?

All overweight children aged 1-18 are welcome at the dietitian.

The program is specifically aimed at children between the ages of 7 and 12. Other ages in consultation with the children's physiotherapy.

Is a referral letter required?

The general practitioner or pediatrician refers your child to a dietician and pediatric physiotherapist. If necessary, also go to the child psychologist or remedial educationalist or GGZ practice nurse for extra support.

You will receive a referral letter for the dietitian. It is very important for the dietician to know how your child's health is doing, in order to be able to give good nutritional advice that suits your child and living situation.

The dietician is immediately accessible, making an appointment without the intervention of a doctor is allowed. If the dietitian is concerned about health, she will refer you to the general practitioner. In the case of a child who is overweight, the dietician will always refer back to the GP.

What does it cost?

The dietitian is included in the basic insurance. Your child will be reimbursed for all costs for dietary advice up to 3 treatment hours per calendar year from the basic insurance. After that, a claim can be made under the supplementary policy.
